Child and Adolescent Counselling

Counselling offers many benefits for children and their families. Therapy can help both parents and children develop new skills and improve communication within the family, build emotional regulation, and support positive brain changes, all within a safe, expressive environment.

At Treehouse, our therapists actively involve parents as ‘co-therapists’ to support their child’s growth. Collaborating with parents and caregivers helps foster a sense of safety, self-compassion, and healthy self-esteem in children.

Treehouse Child and Perinatal Services provides support to children, parents, and families experiencing a range of concerns, including but not limited to:

  • Behavioural challenges

  • Anxiety disorders

  • School-related difficulties

  • Sleep problems and nightmares

  • Trauma, grief, and loss

  • Family separation

  • Attachment and relationship issues

  • Depression

  • Sensory processing disorders

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Parents can self-refer by contacting our administration team. Once a parent intake is completed, your therapist will meet with you to develop a personalised therapeutic plan. One-on-one counselling sessions are then tailored to address your child’s specific concerns while teaching effective strategies and tools.

Our therapists work closely with you as a parent/caregiver, providing regular feedback on your child’s progress in therapy. They also equip you with practical strategies from sessions, ensuring that skills are successfully applied at home and at school.

Treehouse Child and Perinatal Services offers a child-friendly environment featuring an indoor sensory therapy room and an outdoor sensory garden, complete with our vibrant Treehouse Secret Garden art mural.

Our therapists use a variety of evidence-based interventions tailored to each child’s needs, including Theraplay, Interplay, sound therapy programs, EMDR, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), expressive art therapy, solution-focused therapy, mindfulness, and interpersonal therapy.

Perinatal Counselling

At Treehouse Child and Perinatal Services, we offer perinatal counselling and support to mothers and their families before conception, throughout pregnancy, and following the birth of a baby, continuing through infancy and childhood.

Perinatal counselling and support can assist with:

  • Antenatal and postnatal depression and anxiety

  • Parent-infant relationship challenges

  • Pregnancy-related grief and loss

  • Difficulties adjusting to parenthood

Our therapists provide a nurturing and safe space for parents to explore their concerns, offering time for reflection and support to build your capacity to navigate and overcome challenges. We draw on evidence-based approaches, including attachment theory, psychodynamic theory, and infant development research, to gain a deeper understanding of the issues you may be facing.

Sound Therapy Programs

Our Sound Therapy Programs are evidence-based listening interventions designed to gently regulate the nervous system. By using specially filtered music and multi-sensory approaches, these therapies help shift the body and mind into a state of safety and calm.

Grounded in Polyvagal Theory, listening therapies work by tuning the nervous system to respond in healthier ways to stress and connection. This can support improvements in emotional regulation, resilience, social engagement, focus, and overall well-being.

We offer two unique programs, the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) and the Rest and Restore Protocol (RRP)

Both available in-person or online for children, adolescents, and adults.

Safe and Sound Protocol Program

“Think, feel, and connect better through nervous system regulation”

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a powerful listening therapy designed to help regulate the nervous system, so you can better connect with yourself, others, and the world around you.

Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges and based on Polyvagal Theory, SSP is a non-invasive, evidence-based program that involves listening to specially filtered music.

This process retunes the nervous system, creating a deep sense of safety and improving the ability to socially engage. With this foundation of safety, many people experience a transformation in how they interpret not just words, but the emotional meaning of language. As these shifts occur, spontaneous social behaviours, improved self-regulation, and an enhanced ability to learn often emerge.

SSP is safe, effective, and enjoyable for children, adolescents, and adults.

Research and clinical experience show that it can:

  • Decrease anxiety and trauma-related behaviours

  • Reduce auditory sensitivities

  • Enhance social engagement and participation

  • Improve emotional regulation and resilience

  • Support attention and focus (including at school)

  • Promote a calmer emotional and physiological state

Perfect for:

  • Children with big feelings, meltdowns, or difficulty connecting with others

  • Teens experiencing anxiety, school-related stress, or social withdrawal

  • Adults healing from trauma, chronic stress, or emotional burnout

  • Individuals with sensory processing challenges or heightened sound sensitivities

  • Kids or teens who find it hard to concentrate or learn in noisy environments

  • Families who want to enhance connection and communication

  • Neurodivergent individuals (e.g., autism, ADHD) seeking deeper nervous system regulation

  • Anyone looking for long-term emotional resilience and a calmer baseline state

Accessing the SSP and RRP Program at Treehouse Child and Perinatal Services

We begin with an initial consultation to determine whether the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) or Rest and Restore Protocol (RRP), or a combination of both, is the right fit for your needs. During this session, we’ll discuss your goals, the listening schedule, and what to expect throughout the program.

Both SSP and RRP can be completed in-person at the Treehouse office or online from the comfort of your own home, offering flexibility and accessibility for children, teens, and adults.

Our certified Treehouse therapists will work with you to design a personalised listening plan to support deep nervous system regulation (SSP) and/or everyday balance and resilience (RRP).

More information on the Rest and Restore Protocol

Rest and Restore Protocol Program

“Gentle Regulation for Everyday Life.”

The Rest and Restore Protocol (RRP) is a multi-sensory listening therapy that, unlike SSP, is focused on everyday nervous system support and resilience. This shorter, softer listening option is designed to help reset and rebalance after a stressful day or week, making it ideal for ongoing maintenance or as a complement to other therapies.

RRP integrates music, mindful movement, and relaxation practices to create a calming, restorative experience. It is particularly supportive for clients with autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, trauma histories, or emotional dysregulation, offering a gentle pathway to nervous system balance and recovery.

Perfect for:

  • Children who benefit from a daily reset to regulate emotions

  • Teens facing academic pressure, exam stress, or fluctuating moods

  • Adults juggling work, parenting, and emotional fatigue

  • Anyone wanting to maintain the positive effects of SSP with a lighter, ongoing option

  • Clients seeking gentle nervous system support between counselling or therapy sessions

  • People looking for a quick stress recovery after challenging weeks or events

  • Kids and teens who need regular sensory and emotional grounding

  • Individuals seeking preventative care for emotional well-being and resilience

Art Therapy

At Treehouse Child & Perinatal Services, our Art Therapy offers a safe, nurturing space for clients to explore emotions, process experiences, and grow through creativity. Guided by an experienced masters qualified therapist, clients use visual art such as drawing, painting, clay work, collage, or symbolic story-making to heal, reflect, and connect.

Art Therapy is not about artistic ability. It’s about self-expression, self-awareness, and meaningful reflection. Whether you’re a child who finds words hard to use, a parent navigating the challenges of the perinatal period, or a teenager seeking a different way to make sense of your world, art becomes a gentle bridge to understanding.

At Treehouse, we believe healing happens when you feel safe, supported, and seen. Our therapy rooms are warm and welcoming, and our team guides every session with empathy, understanding and expertise.

We walk alongside you wherever you are in your journey and offer art not just as a tool, but as a pathway to connection, insight, and growth.

How Does a Session Work?

Before beginning regular Art Therapy sessions, we start with an intake appointment where we explore important background information, your goals, and any specific needs. This helps us set the sessions up for success and ensures the therapeutic process is tailored to you or your child from the very beginning.

During ongoing sessions, your therapist will begin by gently checking in, asking how you’re feeling and exploring what you’d like to focus on that day. This warm, grounding start helps create a sense of safety, connection, and readiness for the creative work ahead. You’ll be invited to engage in an open or guided art-making activity. This could be anything from painting and drawing to working with clay, collage, or mixed media depending on what feels most comfortable or helpful for you.

After creating, the therapist will gently invite you to reflect on your artwork. What do you notice? What feelings arose while you made it? What might the shapes, colours, or stories mean.Together, you and your therapist connect the themes and insights from the art-making process to your real-life experiences. You’ll explore how what you made links to challenges, hopes, or patterns in your life.

Sessions often end with a moment of calm or grounding whether through a mindfulness exercise or movement activity or simply taking a few moments to notice how you feel after creating.

Why Choose Art Therapy at Treehouse?

Holistic, Whole-Person Approach
True to Treehouse’s philosophy, Art Therapy complements our other evidence-based approaches (like CBT, EMDR, and mindfulness), offering a creative and embodied pathway to emotional wellbeing.

Tailored to Your Needs
Every session is designed with you in mind. Whether you’re a child, an adolescent, a parent, or a family, we adapt our creative work to meet where you’re at.

Safe & Sensory-Friendly Environment
Our purpose-built therapy rooms, combined with access to our outdoor sensory garden, provide an inviting space to make, move, and reflect.

Emotionally Regulating
The act of creating art can be deeply calming. Through clay, paint, collage and movement you can externalise big feelings, name what’s happening inside, and find ways to soothe, organise, and make sense of your inner world.

Building Self-Awareness & Insight
By looking at your artwork with a therapist, you can gain new perspectives, develop insight, and begin to tell new stories about your experiences.

Empowerment through Process
Making art is an active, generative process. Clients are encouraged to take ownership, make choices, and experiment which fosters a sense of agency and confidence.

Virtual Reality (VR)

Virtual Reality (VR) is a digital technology that immerses individuals in interactive, computer-generated environments using a headset and handheld controllers. In therapy, VR serves as an experiential tool that can enhance traditional approaches such as talk therapy, arts therapy, play-based work, and skills-based interventions.

VR allows participants to safely explore scenarios, create art, practice skills, and engage in sensory-rich environments that can support emotional and behavioural goals.

Benefits of VR in Therapy

  • High engagement and motivation, especially for children and teens who benefit from interactive, playful learning

  • Safe, controlled exposure to environments that might otherwise feel overwhelming in real life

  • Supports experiential learning, allowing individuals to “practise” skills rather than only discuss them

  • Promotes creativity and expression through immersive VR art, which can help externalise feelings and thoughts

  • Customisable experiences that match therapeutic goals such as reducing anxiety, building confidence, or improving focus

  • Provides a sense of mastery, as participants can gradually take on more challenging tasks at a comfortable pace

  • Encourages embodiment, allowing users to experience emotions or situations in a physical, sensory way that supports deeper insight

  • Offers immediate feedback, helping individuals understand how certain choices, behaviours, or coping strategies work in various scenarios

How VR Works in a Therapy Session

A therapist may:

  1. Introduce the VR activity and explain the purpose (e.g., practising a social skill, exploring a calming environment).

  2. Guide the participant during the VR experience, offering prompts, reassurance, or reflective questions as needed.

  3. Observe reactions and behaviour, noting emotional responses, coping strategies, and engagement.

  4. Debrief afterward, discussing feelings, challenges, discoveries, or connections to real-life situations.

  5. Integrate insights into ongoing therapeutic goals, skill-building, or future sessions.

Who Can Benefit from Art Therapy at Treehouse?

  • Children & Adolescents:
For young people, art can serve as a non-verbal language to express feelings, navigate relationships, and safely explore inner worlds.

  • Perinatal Parents / Caregivers:
Pregnancy, postpartum, loss, or complex emotions around motherhood/fatherhood can be gently processed through creative expression.

  • Families:
Art gives family members a shared, low-pressure way to connect, communicate, and understand each other’s emotional experience.

  • Those Facing Anxiety, Trauma, or Transition:
Whether you're coping with grief, adjusting to a new life phase, or working through trauma, art offers a stabilising, transformative space.

Examples of Therapeutic VR Activities

  • Exploring a calming forest or beach to practise grounding techniques

  • Walking through a virtual classroom to prepare for a school transition

  • Using 3D art tools to create a sculpture that represents a feeling or memory

  • Participating in virtual social interactions such as ordering food or greeting someone

  • Playing structured VR games that target problem-solving, teamwork, or emotional control

  • Completing mindfulness meditations within immersive nature scenes

Therapists may use VR to support:

  • Emotional regulation (e.g., calming environments, guided breathing experiences)

  • Social skill development (e.g., practising conversations, role-play in simulated settings)

  • Exposure to new or challenging environments (e.g., school hallways, public transport, busy shops)

  • Relaxation and mindfulness through nature scenes, guided meditations, and grounding exercises

  • Self-awareness and reflection using creative VR tools such as 3D drawing or sculpting

  • Cognitive and behavioural skills such as planning, problem-solving, and coping strategies
